Telluride Homes For Sale

Telluride homes for sale sit on a parcel of land rich in history.  The 0.7 square-mile town of Telluride is the seat of San Miguel County and is the most populated locale in the county.  Founded back in 1878 and incorporated as a town nine years later in 1887, Telluride was originally called Columbia.  The town gets its name from the element tellurium, which ironically enough was never found here.

Telluride homes for sale today are prized for their secluded location, something miners and their families would have found inexplicable a hundred years ago.  Gold was discovered here in 1858 and other ores such as silver, zinc, copper, and lead were found in the mountains.  Today, Telluride’s historic mines such as Pandora, Nellie, Smuggler-Union and Sheridan mines stand as memories of the town’s mining past.  Numerous historical buildings remain in town – among these are the San Miguel County Courthouse built in 1885, the L.L. Nunn House, the New Sheridan Hotel and Opera House, and the Davis House, to name a few.

By 1972, Telluride became known for a soft, fluffy kind of white gold – snow.  With the first ski lift in place, the town began its journey towards being a world-class ski destination and “Colorado's best kept secret” was out in the open.  Soon visitors began investing in Telluride homes for sale and constructing their own Telluride luxury properties, something which continues to this day.  The median price for homes in Telluride today is $2M.
